The venerable ATR aircraft was initially brought to fruition by the association of two manufacturers, Aeritalia, of Italy, and Aerospatiale, of France. Appreciated for its comfort and convenience as a short-haul turboprop, the first ATR 42 - which represents the aircraft's seat count - went into service in December1985.
Over time, as the ATR 42 gained popularity, the airlines expressed a need for an aircraft with a greater seating capacity, which ultimately gave way to the development of the ATR 72, an enlarged version of the ATR 42 with an enhanced seating capacity for 64 to 72 passengers. The ATR 72 went into service in 1989.
Primarily recognized as a passenger transport, the ATR is also offered as a freighter aircraft, either as a new factory manufactured unit, with the designation 600F, or through ATRs cargo conversion program, enabling older passenger ATRs that might have otherwise been decommissioned to be converted into cargo aircraft.
Over the years, numerous improvements have been made to the very popular ATR 42 and 72 aircraft, not only assuring that they remain technologically up to date, but also to guarantee their continued utilization for years to come.
